German crash helmet, is it safe?

My friend showed me a German WW2 military motorcycle helmet that he owned yesterday
I've always been a fan of the old WW stuff, I think they're really cool

But can't help but be curious, does a German crash helmet like this really keep the rider safe if there's a crash?
Any thoughts or opinions are welcome

Most of those were made from steel or a composite with minimal padding, and they were designed more for low speed impact or shrapnel than high speed crashes, like no real chin protection, no shock absorption, just a basic liner. So yeah, cool to collect, display, maybe even wear for a vintage ride if you're just cruising but definitely not something you'd want to trust your head with in a real accident.

Yeah I agree, they were mostly designed to protect from minor bumps or debris, not high speed impacts, had a friend who learned the hard way
